ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

logo_outlnsEnvironmental Health focuses on how the environment affects the health of the community.  We work to minimize the public's exposure to environmental hazards such as food borne diseases, harmful chemicals, and biological agents.

We are a division of Clallam County's Department of Health and Human Services, and are part of a system of national, state and local public health agencies.

We have a professional staff of eleven, including Environmental Health Specialists, Permit Technicians, and administrative staff.  Environmental Health programs are primarily funded by fees collected for the services provided.  Our services are also funded by a variety of federal and state grants and local tax dollars.

Programs
The Environmental Health Division protects public health through the following programs:

Food Safety Program
The food safety program works to ensure safe food service practices.  We offer public education, issue food handler cards, and inspect and permit food service establishments.

On-Site (Septic) Program
Our on-site program makes sure that septic systems work properly.  We do this through the permitting process, homeowner education, and responding to complaints.

Drinking Water Program & Laboratory
Our water quality program monitors the quality of drinking water in Clallam County.  The lab tests water samples from individuals and public water systems.

Solid Waste Program
The solid waste program permits solid waste facilites such as landfills.  We respond to complaints and enforce solid waste regulations.

Hazardous Waste Program
Our hazardous waste program works to ensure safe disposal of hazardous waste.  We organize an annual household hazardous waste disposal event, and offer technical assistance to small businesses and homeowners.

Shellfish Program
Our shellfish program focuses on marine biotoxin monitoring and notification, and public education.  We collect samples and inform the public of shellfish closures due to high levels of PSP toxin.

School Safety Program
Our school  program monitors school safety issues such as food service and air quality.
