SOLID WASTE FACILITIES

Clallam County Environmental Health is responsible for permitting, inspecting and monitoring solid waste facilities according to State regulations.  Solid waste facilities include active and closed landfills, transfer stations, and recycling facilities.

Permitting Solid Waste Facilities
Both Clallam County and Washington Department of Ecology review solid waste facility applications prior to approval or denial.  For application materials and more information, please
contact the Environmental Health Division.

Solid Waste Inspections
Environmental Health is required to inspect the permitted solid waste sites in Clallam County.  The inspections check general sanitation and compliance with the solid waste permit.  The frequency of inspections depends on the type of facility.

Active landfills are inspected at least four times each year.  Landfills that are in the process of closing are inspected as needed, at least quarterly.  Transfer stations and closed landfills are inspected at least twice each year.  Recycling stations are inspected at least annually.

Monitoring Requirements
Each solid waste facility must submit reports to Environmental Health for review.  Active and closed landfills must provide testing and monitoring reports for their groundwater, stormwater, leachate and/or gas.  The monitoring occurs at different time intervals depending on the site.  Transfer stations and recycling facilities are required to report the type and amount of waste collected in a year.
