Summary

Clallam County's Public Stream Layer which is a derivative of the STR_CO_MSTR layer with the centerlines of streams and lakes removed for clarity on the webmaps. Consisting of Streams obtained from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and adapted for Clallam County use; it includes the latest stream update of Sept. 2012. Mapped at 1:24k

Description

This is currently Clallam County's Public Stream layer, which consists of 24k Streams originally taken from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stream layer and updated with other value added mapping projects. It now reflects the re-mapping of the East end of the County (from the Lyre River East to the County Line). This remapping began in 2006 and was finished Sept. 12, 2012 During this remapping, the streams were relocated to match LIDAR, Contours or Orthophotography of 2005-2006, with some streams added and others deleted. The new stream segments were stream typed by Clallam County if they had not already been typed by the DNR. This typing was inferred using additional attribute data contained herein. Please see the INFERRED field for more information. This layer is derived from the STR_CO_MSTR layer by removing the centerlines of Lakes and Double Line Streams to create clarity on the web maps.. The original Water Type Classifications used in conjunction with DNR Forest Practices regulations between 1975 and (1) March 1, 2005 for Western Washington and (2) March 1, 2006 for Eastern Washington. DNR will not synchronize with on-going changes to the new water typing system, therefore it will no longer be maintained by the DNR.. The new system was implemented March 1, 2005 for Western Washington .  Basically, once the new scheme was turned "on" the water type was frozen.  Note: the water typing system was developed solely for the regulation of forest practices (WAC 222). Referred to in the Clallam County Critical Areas Ordinance. . DNR Forest Practices Fish Habitat Water Type Code. Implemented for Western Washington March 1, 2005 and for Eastern Washington March 1, 2006. Used in conjunction with WAC 222-16-030 and 222-16-031 and the Washington Forest Practices Board Manual. For stream features, this Code is based on a multi-parameter, field verified geographic information system (GIS) logistic regression model.  The water typing model is based on thousands of field surveys of fish presence and fish habitat.  Other model parameters are gradient, elevation, basin size and average annual precipitation derived from the US Geological Survey's digital elevation model (DEM) for the state of Washington. Technical considerations required that the model be developed on a "virtual" stream network system derived from the DEM database.   The DEM-based model results were then transferred to the DNR's hydrographic GIS "map" (WCHYDRO) in order to implement the new habitat based water types.

Watercourse continuity code.  This is the classification of stream flow in relation to its expression at the earth's surface. The most common condition is that a stream is continuous. An example of using WC_CONTU_CD with WC_PERIOD_CD: If areas of perennial, intermittent or ephemeral flow exist along a stream reach they are not separated out; the hydrologist chooses the dominant periodicity and calls the continuity "interrupted". This attribute uses the scale denominator to indicate the largest scale at which the feature should be displayed.  All data in the data set is appropriate to display at 1:24,000. Description
Abstract
This is currently Clallam County's Public Stream layer, which consists of 24k Streams originally taken from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stream layer and updated with other value added mapping projects. It now reflects the re-mapping of the East end of the County (from the Lyre River East to the County Line). This remapping began in 2006 and was finished Sept. 12, 2012 During this remapping, the streams were relocated to match LIDAR, Contours or Orthophotography of 2005-2006, with some streams added and others deleted. The new stream segments were stream typed by Clallam County if they had not already been typed by the DNR. This typing was inferred using additional attribute data contained herein. Please see the INFERRED field for more information. This layer is derived from the STR_CO_MSTR layer by removing the centerlines of Lakes and Double Line Streams to create clarity on the web maps.. Purpose
Clallam County's Public Stream Layer which is a derivative of the STR_CO_MSTR layer with the centerlines of streams and lakes removed for clarity on the webmaps. Wet area. To avoid any legal or jurisdictional implication of the use of the term "wetland", the term "wet area" is used in Hydro to describe lands including swamps, marshes, bogs, and similar areas such as wet meadows, river overflows, mudflats, and natural ponds. The original Water Type Classifications used in conjunction with DNR Forest Practices regulations between 1975 and (1) March 1, 2005 for Western Washington and (2) March 1, 2006 for Eastern Washington. DNR will not synchronize with on-going changes to the new water typing system, therefore it will no longer be maintained by the DNR.. The new system was implemented March 1, 2005 for Western Washington . Basically, once the new scheme was turned "on" the water type was frozen. Note: the water typing system was developed solely for the regulation of forest practices (WAC 222). Referred to in the Clallam County Critical Areas Ordinance. . DNR Forest Practices Fish Habitat Water Type Code. Implemented for Western Washington March 1, 2005 and for Eastern Washington March 1, 2006. Used in conjunction with WAC 222-16-030 and 222-16-031 and the Washington Forest Practices Board Manual. For stream features, this Code is based on a multi-parameter, field verified geographic information system (GIS) logistic regression model. The water typing model is based on thousands of field surveys of fish presence and fish habitat. Other model parameters are gradient, elevation, basin size and average annual precipitation derived from the US Geological Survey's digital elevation model (DEM) for the state of Washington. Technical considerations required that the model be developed on a "virtual" stream network system derived from the DEM database. The DEM-based model results were then transferred to the DNR's hydrographic GIS "map" (WCHYDRO) in order to implement the new habitat based water types.

Watercourse continuity code. This is the classification of stream flow in relation to its expression at the earth's surface. The most common condition is that a stream is continuous. An example of using WC_CONTU_CD with WC_PERIOD_CD: If areas of perennial, intermittent or ephemeral flow exist along a stream reach they are not separated out; the hydrologist chooses the dominant periodicity and calls the continuity "interrupted". Feature source date. The date of the compilation map or image source used when adding or updating hydrography data. January 1, 1753 is used when source date is unknown or unavailable. If the source year is known, but month and date are unknown then January 1 is used as a default.

Feature source scale number. Describes the scale denominator of the map or image source for the hydrography watercourse data additions or updates in the database. Exact scale can be input. The density of hydrography features displayed will vary by the base map scale. A default scale of "0" should be used when the source scale is unknown. Example: 24000.

Feature accuracy code. Describes the positional accuracy of the hydrography watercourse data being added or updated in the database. The spatial record is accurate to within the tolerance given (in meters). Use actual value e.g. .001; 3; 100. All units are entered in meters. A default code of "0.000" should be used when the accuracy is unknown. Example: 12.19 (12.19 corresponds to 40 feet; the positional accuracy of the spatial record is +/- 40 feet).

Output scale. The map scale at which a given feature may be displayed. Some hydrological features are too small to display at a scale smaller than 1:24,000. This attribute uses the scale denominator to indicate the largest scale at which the feature should be displayed. All data in the data set is appropriate to display at 1:24,000. This attribute is intended to be used when displaying these data at different scales. For example, if creating a map at a scale of 1:100,000 the data that is appropriate to display at 1:24,000 may appear too dense and therefore the map may not be legible. This attribute could be utilized to "de-densify" the data.
