Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is responsible for proactive police patrols in all unincorporated areas of Clallam County. Patrol deputies respond to calls for service (CFS) made by citizens in need of police assistance and activity seek out crime and traffic offenders.  Deputies in this division also serve in several specialized positions including School Resource Officer (SRO/DARE), Recreational Deputy (RecDep), Boating Safety Deputy, K9 Deputy, and with the Search and Rescue Posse (SARP).  The Division is dedicated to the principles of Community Oriented Policing and believes that modern policing depends upon the cooperative efforts of the entire community.

The Patrol Division is commanded by a Captain and is staffed with four (4) sergeants and twenty (20) deputies.  The Division is responsible for the entire breadth of the county so the division mans three detachment offices located in Beaver, Clallam Bay, and Sequim as well as staffing the main office located in the county courthouse in Port Angeles.  The Division answers about 14,000 CFS a year and drives more than 500,000 miles per year responding to the needs of our citizens.

SPECIALIZED POSITIONS:

School Resource Officer (SRO/DARE):  The Deputy assigned to this position spends the majority of his time within the various public schools countywide.  The SRO is responsible for presenting the DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) curriculum to all 5th grade students.  The SRO investigates crimes occurring in the schools and acts as a law enforcement ambassador with the students as well as a liaison between the schools´ and Sheriff´s administrations.  We view this contact and interaction between a deputy and school students as a vital part of the Department´s commitment to our community and our children.

Recreational Deputy (RecDep):  We have forged a unique cooperative partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) that has resulted in both agencies establishing specialized positions within their ranks. The RecDep receives specialized training from WDFW and is commissioned in both Clallam and Jefferson County to enforce wildlife, fishing, and boating laws.  The RecDep works hand in hand with WDFW officers during special enforcement emphases and can be called upon to respond to a wildlife-related violation when WDFW officers are unavailable.  The RecDep and WDFW Rec Officer are responsible for patrolling the Olympic Discovery Trail, conducting boating safety inspections, enforcing backcountry ATV and motorcycle rules, and conduct marine enforcement patrols.

Boating Safety Officers:  These specially trained deputies patrol our fresh water lakes during summer months to assist recreational boaters and to assure that safe boating procedures are practiced by all.  They utilize a small fleet of watercraft that include a 28-foot twin engine cruiser, a Boston whaler outboard, and a rigid hull inflatable wave runner.  They also provide safety and security for various civic and private events such as hydroplane races, fishing derbies, and the Port Angeles 4th of July fireworks.

K9 Deputy:  This deputy is a certified K9 officer and is responsible for providing K9 services for drug investigations and illegal drug searches. The Department´s K9 is a highly trained drug detection dog and K9 services are requested by detectives and deputies.  Other police agencies may request our K9 services.  The K9 deputy and his partner are regularly asked to conduct routine searches of county schools. They also conduct frequent inspections of international ferry traffic entering Port Angeles and conduct searches at the State prison facility in Clallam Bay.  The K9 deputy is tasked with the full-time care and keep of his canine partner.  The dog goes home with the deputy everyday and is part of his household.

Search and Rescue Posse (SARP): The Patrol Division provides supervision and manpower to SARP.  This highly trained group of dedicated volunteers conducts numerous SAR missions on behalf of our citizens.  The SARP members maintain a resourceful website at www.olypen.com/ccsosarp
