Recreational shellfishing is regulated by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.  They determine fishing seasons, open and close beaches and issue permits to individuals to harvest shellfish.  Please see their website, and 2002 regulations.

It is important that shellfish are collected in safe areas and handled in safe ways to protect people from illness.  In order to help you avoid getting sick, we have included information on this website about:

Publications
Much of the information on these pages is available in a guide published by the Environmental Health Division titled Recreational Shellfish Harvest.  It is available in
PDF format, and a printed version is available at the Clallam County Courthouse.

The State of Washington has published a booklet titled Public Shellfish Sites of Puget Sound.  It contains information about harvesting, handling and cooking shellfish, and preventing shellfish pollution.  It also has maps of shellfish beaches.  It is available online from the Department of Health.
