Preparing for a Disaster A Message From the Emergency Managers in Clallam County Download this document from the Downloads and Links page . . .
Clallam County is geographically isolated, with limited transportation routes. In the event of a wide-spread emergency, the community cannot rely on significant outside assistance. We must work together to more effectively preserve lives, protect property and ensure public health in times of natural or technological disaster.
You too have an important role in helping all of us in Clallam County be better prepared for disasters affecting our community.
We are subject to a full range of natural and technological hazards that could represent a serious threat to public safety and property. The Emergency Managers of Clallam County and the Cities of Port Angeles, Sequim and Forks, and the Tribes of Makah, Quileute, Jamestown, and Lower Elwha work in a cooperative effort to meet the unique needs of the impacted population, whatever the nature and scope of the incident with an ALL HAZARDS philosophy. Along with other local agencies and organizations of the Peninsula Regional Emergency Program (PREP), we can provide a "seamless" multi jurisdictional approach, ensuring the best use of local response and recovery resources in time of community crisis.
Disasters do not recognize juris-dictional boundaries. The needs of the community in crisis can be met more effectively if there is the coordinated application of combined resources. To ensure an effective emergency pre-paredness for our community, we cooperatively plan and conduct regular drills and exercises, and carry on a program of public education.
You can substantially reduce the burden on emergency response and recovery organizations in time of emergency by preparing an emergency kit of items such as food, water, and minor first aid needs for the first seventy-two hours to allow emergency resources to deal with the more critical needs of disaster victims.
Meet with your families, neighborhood, and work force, to develop preparedness plans and emergency kits. The local American Red Cross and Emergency Management offices have brochures that can help you. We have listed contact information for the various Emergency Managers in Clallam County. We understand that some of you may live in one jurisdiction, work in another, and have family in still another. The information from emergency managers in Clallam County is distributed to increase public awareness in the importance of a cooperative effort to protect the people and environment that are the beauty and nature of our part of the Pacific Northwest.
