Commissioner Tharinger has been an active resident of Clallam County for over thirty years. In that time he has been a strong voice for his community while building a successful small business. In recognition of his long-standing record of community service, Steve received the Clallam County Community Service Award in 1994. He is also a state-certified, volunteer mediator with the Peninsula Dispute Resolution Center. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Colorado College.
Steve´s involvement in community planning issues includes serving as a member and chairman of the Clallam County Planning Commission (1992-1997), Chairman of the Carlsborg Urban Growth Area Task Force (1994), member of the Clallam County Forest/Mineral Lands Committee (1991), member of Clallam County Agricultural Resource Lands Committee and a member of Dungeness River Flood Control Advisory Board.
Presently, Steve chairs the Dungeness River Management Team, is a participant in the Shared Strategy for Salmon Recovery Forum and chairs the Clallam County Agricultural Advisory Committee. In January of 2002, Steve was appointed by Governor Locke to serve on the Salmon Recovery Funding Board, which works on funding salmon recovery projects throughout the state. He has been selected to serve on two legislative advisory committees for Watershed Planning Implementation and Biodiversity and is presently serving on the Washington Biodiversity Council. Serving on these boards and committees has helped him develop a better understanding of local resource issues.
As Commissioner, Steve represents Clallam County on several regional councils. He sits on the Council of Governments for the Olympic Area Agency on Aging, chairs the Olympic Consortium for Workforce Development and the Peninsula Regional Support Network for Mental Health. Within the county, Steve chairs the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, is on the board of the Clallam County Economic Development Council, and active in the Clallam NetWorks project. He is also on the Clallam County Board of Health.
Steve is the Board of Commissioners´ liaison to several county departments: Health & Human Services, Community Development, Treasurer, Assessor, and Cooperative Extension.
Steve and his wife Yvonne are partners in Dungeness Woodworks, a small, value-added wood manufacturing firm. When time permits, they like to bike, kayak, ski and enjoy the Clallam County quality of life. |
